Slow Down Sundays
Unfortunately, for a while we had allowed our Sundays to be just as busy and chaotic as the other days of the week. Lately, we have been making a real effort to get back to Slow Down Sundays and it has brought a level of peace to our family that we had been missing and desperately needing. G & I get up early every day. Call it perimenopause or anxiety or middle age womanhood, but I consistently wake up before 6am most days of the week. I tend to wake briefly between 3:15-3:30am, fall back asleep and then wake up for real around 5:45am or earlier. It’s nutty, but I like waking up on the earlier side, even on weekends. G is the same when it comes to waking up on the earlier side. Funny, how we ended up together and share similar sleep habits. It works. :)
This Sunday morning was perfect. We both woke up before 6am, chatted for an hour or so and then decided to watch 24 Legacy. Apparently, he has been watching it recently and I just knew that I was not going to be a fan. I love cop shows, most things FBI, CIA, hospital shows, all things HGTV, Food Network, Amazing Race and Rom Com. I had tried 24 before and it for whatever reason, it didn’t hold my attention, until 24 Legacy. It’s gripping, interesting and action-packed. It is the perfect show to snuggle up and watch together before starting the day. I enjoyed every minute of it. There is something about discovering a show together, examining the angles and laughing through the surprises in the writing. It helps us to continue to connect and grow even more in like in our marriage. 20 years and counting!!!!
The peace that we started the day with carried us into getting everyone up to get ready for church, making a yummy breakfast and getting everyone out of the house to get to church, on time! Church was awesome and right on time. After church fast food requests were met for me & the 4 Sibs. Then, we returned home for me to order everyone around through cleaning up and getting things organized for the week. I said church was awesome, but I’m not perfect. I can’t rest until the house is picked up and there is some level of order throughout. I know I am a lot as a Mom & Wife and I can be a drill sergeant at times, but I know everyone feels a little better when things are neater all around. One way for us to maintain some levels of peace in our 6 person household is for all of us to work together to tidy up and clean up on a regular basis. That is just what works in our family. I’m not talking museum-level clean, just neat and able to see the floor in most of the rooms throughout the house. :)
All in all, this Slow Down Sunday has been such a gift to my mind, body, and spirit in this season of middle-aged womanhood.
